Westmanska Vagnmuseet
Carriage museum in Linköping
The carriage museum Westmanska Vagnmuseet is located on the estate Valla Gård, the rural part of the large open-air museum Gamla Linköping on the outskirts of the provincial capital Linköping.
Westmanska Vagnmuseet is situated in a historically inspired hall that was built in 1993 especially for the carriage museum. The museum is located in the immediate vicinity of the agricultural engineering museum Odalmannens Museum as well as the Tekniska Verkens Museum, the museum of the local public utilities.
The interior of the approximately 50-meter-long museum hall is designed in the style of a historicat street scene with cobblestones and old street lamps. Surrounded by historical decorations you will find the museum's extensive collection, consisting of around 50 different, perfectly restored and ready to drive historical horse-drawn carriages and 15 horse-drawn sleighs.
The collection of the Westmanska Vagnmuseet contains passenger and freight carriages as well as their corresponding counterparts in the form of sleighs. Among them are several everyday models as well as some rarities, such as one of the rare large wicker carriages with a separate coach box and two benches facing each other.
Among the carriages there are historical hearses or the so-called Vursten as a typical family carriage from the time towards the end of the 19th century. Every year on Ascension Day, the historical carriages drive with suitably dressed coachmen and passengers through Valla Gård and the historic district of Gamla Linköping in a large parade.
