Virserums Möbelindustrimuseum
Industrial museum in Virserum
The industrial museum Virserums Möbelindustrimusem is located on the grounds of the cultural center Bolagsområdet in Virserum, about 32 kilometers southwest of Hultsfred.
The museum represents the history of the once well-known but long-gone furniture industry in and around Virserum, which at peak times consisted of a total of 40 furniture factories. At the heart of the museum is a carpentry, which is equipped with old machines from the 1920s and old tools and workbenches.
Active carpentry in the furniture museum
The carpentry is fully functional and is put into operation every day during the summer months. The miniature replica of a wing chair from the 1940s is produced in small numbers in order to contribute with the sales to the preservation of the privately owned museum. The drive energy is still generated as before by a water wheel at the back of the workshop and transmitted via transmission belts to the individual machines.
In addition to the carpentry, there is an exhibition with a selection of a variety of furniture from the different factories in Virserum. The models span over a period of several decades – from the first handmade birch wood furniture from the 1920s to sofas and shelving systems from the 1960s.
Upstairs, an old newsreel film is shown, which was shot in 1947 on the occasion of the large furniture exhibition in Virserum. In individual clips, the film presents the various furniture factories existing at that time in Virserum and their production.
